Some of the attributes that stand carers in good stead are

  • Understanding and sensitivity for children's emotional needs
  • A real interest in caring for a child's day-to-day needs
  • Patience, kindness and self awareness
  • A firm but fair approach
  • A willingness to look at things from another perspective
  • An ability to take on information
  • Exposure to family situations
  • Faith or strong relationships to draw upon
  • Personal resilience and maturity
  • Experience of working with children, parenting
  • A good sense of humour
